With the use of bandages, the care and treatment of the skin in all stages of eczema are possible. Fat-moist dressings (also called “wet wraps”) with suitable basic therapeutics have proven effective as they alleviate itching, soften eczema areas, reduce scratching opportunities, and cool the skin. They supply the skin with fat and moisture, and enhance the effectiveness of active ingredients. At the same time, the bandages provide protection against mechanical irritation (scratching) and the penetration of dirt and bacteria. Fat-moist dressings are suitable for both chronically infected and acutely inflamed skin.
Fat-moist dressings = “Wet-Wraps”
Materials:
- select a fat-rich basic therapeutic according to the skin condition: “Moist on Moist” & “Fat on Dry”
- lukewarm tap water
- scissors
- elastic tubular bandage
Procedure:
- cutting two elastic tubular bandages to the desired length
- apply a thick layer of the basic therapeutic over the entire area to be covered
- dip the first bandage into lukewarm tap water
- apply the firmly wrung and still warm bandage
- apply the second dry bandage in the same manner
- any clothing garment can now be worn over the bandages
- every 3 hours, the lower layer of the bandage should be moistened with lukewarm tap water
- the basic therapeutic should be renewed after a maximum of 6 hours, and if necessary, the bandage should be reapplied
Important:
- after treatment with a fat-moist dressing, apply the basic therapy cream again to the affected areas!
- in infants and small children, there is an increased risk of chilling, so either provide the torso or the arms or the legs with the fat-moist dressing
- fat-moist dressings are not applied if topical glucocorticosteroids or topical calcineurin inhibitors have been applied directly beforehand.
